Many databases and on-line catalogs have a screen that will guide you through a search.

You can type in your search words and choose how to search them (for example, from the author, index, title, keyword, etc.).

You can then choose to insert the boolean search operators (and, or, not).

World Wide Web search engines often have this option listed under "Advanced Searches."
